ChitChat — Real-time Messaging
A messaging app built to production standards — presence, delivery state and media, not a toy chat demo. In active development.
The challenge
Chat is deceptively hard: messages must survive reconnects, arrive once, stay ordered, and show honest delivery state even when the socket dropped a second ago.
How I approached it
- Built the transport on Socket.io with an optimistic local queue, so a message appears instantly and reconciles with the server acknowledgement.
- Implemented typing indicators, presence and read receipts as lightweight ephemeral events, kept off the persistent message path.
- Added media sharing with client-side compression before upload, which keeps sends fast on Indian mobile data.
- Wired push notifications so conversations stay live when the app is backgrounded or killed.
